This event will be the third time that I will be cutting and donating my hair towards making a wig for a child with cancer. Long hair has always been a part of my identity growing up – as a figure skater, I was told by my mom and coaches that I needed to keep my hair long in order to wear it in a bun for my competitions. It was an expectation; to succeed, to win, I needed to be the full package – from not having holes in my tights right up to the perfect ballerina bun. Donating my hair has taught me over and over again that, while my long hair was a significant component of my appearance especially in my sport, my hair does not define me. Having this opportunity to give part of my identity to someone else, I hope that my hair can help them feel more confident, beautiful, and strong; just as it did for me at times while I was competing.
